Formula & example

Solve ax + b = c by subtracting b from both sides and dividing by a. Enter coefficients as decimals, not expressions. The solver keeps decimal inputs as exact fractions and substitutes the result back into the equation. If a is zero, the equation either holds for every real number or has no solution. Example: 2 x + 3 = 11 becomes 2 x = 8, so x = 4. The approximation uses the existing display precision; exact fractions are shown separately.

ax + b = c; x = (c − b) / a

2 x + 3 = 11 → x = 4
